Becoming a Volunteer

The most important and valuable resource we have is the large number of volunteers who give their time to provide our services to victims and witnesses of crime.

We can use your help in many different ways, including:

  • Providing support and information to victims in their homes, on the telephone, and in our office (Victim Service)
  • Supporting those affected by crime within the court (Witness Service)
  • Helping with administration
  • Serving on our committee, using your local financial, management, fundraising or other life experience
  • Helping to raise funds
  • Working on short-term projects

We provide support, advice, guidance and ongoing training for all volunteers.

Whether you want to work directly with people or whether your skills are in administration, publicity, fundraising or some other aspect, we are keen to involve you. If you would like to learn new skills or build on the ones you already have, we can offer you many opportunities to stretch yourself, meet new people and develop your interests.

What time do volunteers give?

This depends on how you choose to be involved and the work needing done. We agree the time commitment with each volunteer.

Do volunteers need specific skills for the Victim or Witness Services?

You do not need specific skills as we provide comprehensive training. Our volunteers come with a wide range of skills and experience. We are looking for flexible, adaptable and non-judgemental individuals who are able to get on well with people of all ages and backgrounds.

While you go through your training, there is continuous assessment and feedback. At the end of the training there is a final assessment to make sure that Victim Support is the right organisation for you.

Helping in other ways

If you wish to help in other ways, we will discuss this with you so we can match your skills and interests with the opportunities available.

Our commitment to you

We will provide you with the training and support you need, involve you in our national and local activities and reimburse legitimate expenses.

Why we need you

In any crime, the emotional wounds often last a lot longer than physical ones and people still need someone to talk to.

In difficult times like this, they can turn to us at Victim Support. We’re a charity that provides all kinds of support for victims of crime.

We can help by providing information on police and court procedures, and assist when attending court. We can help with compensation, insurance, housing and benefit problems or offer simple crime prevention information.

Most of the time though, it’s giving people reassurance and emotional support, helping them to get over their fears.

In this instance, we’re not after your hard-earned cash. We’d just like you to donate some of your time; a few hours a week, helping people get on with their lives.

We’re looking for volunteers who are good listeners, people who are understanding and can get on with people of all ages, cultures and backgrounds.

The reward for helping people can be immense, and of course, Victim Support will give you all the training you need.

But you’ve already shown you can do the most important thing volunteers have to do, by taking the time to read about our work.

We urgently need new volunteers, so if you think you are the kind of person who can help people, please call us.

Sponsor a volunteer

Victim Support depends totally on the commitment of its volunteers.

Increasing demand for our services means we need to recruit and train new volunteers.

Volunteer sponsorship is a way that your company can support the work of Victim Support in your local area or across Scotland, by directly contributing to the costs of recruiting, training and supporting volunteers.
